Water that can only be heard

“As I heard the sound of water getting filled, I knew, it’s time to close the tap.”

We, often, take for granted or do not realize, how our sense of hearing helps us through our day to day life. This project aims to bring in notice, the most common sound reminding us, how magnificent our sense of hearing is.

It’s a common scene in the Indian kitchens, filling up the containers during the few hours the water is provided. Container is kept under the tap to be filled, and rest is left to our sense of sound to check when it is filled. Our ears can distinguish between the sounds that are produced at different levels of water. And that’s how we know, when to close the tap.

This project is playing with the sound of water getting filled in a container, and how the level of water, distance of container or the speed of water affects the sound.

Nalka is a Hindi word that means water tap.
