“The project brief was to study the aural landscape that constitute the life world of the Social Group and how these sounds create meaning in their daily communal activity; to know what sounds are held important by the group and understand the sounds which are important but not noticed by the group.
The research was conducted in the old Wadaj area of Ahmedabad. There, a small village is situated where most of the families do embroidery and stitching craftwork. I chose one such family of 7 members. They had been doing this craftwork for generations and this was their main source of income.
While interacting with them, researcher could associate a particular sound with every member of the family, calling them their identity. Researcher came up with a series of sounds which form their daily lives. It was interesting to observe the meanings of sounds around them which they hold important and how various sounds play an important role in their lives, without being noticed by the family members.
